Bank Negara to issue RM1b Merdeka savings bond

BANK Negara Malaysia yesterday announced the issuance of Bon Simpanan Merdeka 01/2009, amounting to RM1 billion on March 18 2009. This is the first issue of the two series of three-year RM1 billion bond each in 2009.

The bond, which will be scripless and based on syariah principles, is an additional savings instrument for Malaysian citizens who are 56 years and above. The bond will also be offered to Malaysian citizens who are retired on medical grounds, regardless of age.

Eligible investors wishing to subscribe may apply for Bon Simpanan Merdeka 01/2009 during the sales period, commencing from February 18 to March 17 2009, the central bank said in a statement.

The bond which has a three-year tenure, offers a return of five per cent per annum and provides the flexibility for early redemption before the maturity date.


The minimum investment in Bon Simpanan Merdeka 01/2009 is RM1,000 with a maximum of RM50,000 per investor. This limit applies to aggregate holdings per investor for the two series of Bon Simpanan Merdeka issued in 2009.

Bon Simpanan Merdeka 01/2009 can be subscribed at all commercial banks, including Islamic banks, Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Bhd, Bank Simpanan Nasional and Bank Pertanian Malaysia Bhd.

The allocation of Bon Simpanan Merdeka 01/2009 is based on first come first serve basis. Successful applicants will be notified by their agent banks. Profit payments will be made on a monthly basis through the bondholders' accounts with their agent banks.
